Grand Palais, Paris Photo
11/10/2011 — 11/13/2011
On the occasion of the 15th edition of Paris Photo, The Walther Collection presents Events of the Self: Portraiture and Social Identity which has originally been curated for the Collection's inaugural exhibition in Neu-Ulm, Germany in 2010. Featured as part of Paris Photo's "Private Collections" series, and coinciding with the fair's celebration of African photography, the exhibition will be on view from November 10–13, 2011.
Events of the Self offers an extensive account of modern and contemporary African photography. The exhibition investigates diverse formulations of portraiture, questioning the relation of self-representation and social identity across three generations of African artists and during societal transitions from industrial to postindustrial economy and colonial to postcolonial modernity. Reflecting the changed contexts of photography in showing the structural and cultural transformations reshaping individual and collective subjectivities, the exhibition also incorporates the work of German photographers, establishing a cross-cultural dialogue between African and European pictorial strategies.
Paris Photo is the largest international art fair dedicated to the photographic medium and is held each November at the historic Grand Palais in Paris. Since 1997, the Fair's mission is to promote and nurture photographic creation and the galleries, publishers and artists at its source.
Paris Photo brings together up to 200 exhibitors from across the world, offering collectors and enthusiasts the most diverse and qualitative presentation of photography-driven projects today. Leading galleries showcase historical and contemporary artworks from modern masters to young talents. Specialized publishers and art book dealers present unique and rare editions, as well as book launches and signature sessions with many of today's most renowned artists.
