The Black Photo Album (2013) presents Santu Mofokeng's collection of private photographs commissioned by urban black working- and middle-class families in South Africa between 1890–1950. Painterly in style, the images evoke the artifices of Victorian photography. Mofokeng analyzes the self-image, sensibilities, and aspirations of South Africa's black population and its desire for representation and recognition in times of colonial rule and suppression. Essays by Santu Mofokeng and James T. Campbell.
