Zhang Peili began as a painter and transitioned to working with video in the mid 1980s. He is recognized as the first Chinese artist to explore video and multimedia installation as a means of serious artistic exploration, gaining him the reputation of the "Father of video art in China." Zhang’s works tend to reject traditional viewing habits and use the serial presentation of provocative visual symbols to challenge viewers to investigate the deep instability and intense incongruities of China in the late 20th and early 21st century.
