Zhang Dali studied at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and Design, located in Beijing. He left Beijing after the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre and moved to Italy, where he lived until 1993. Zhang began as a painter but now uses a range of different media and materials, including painting, photography, sculptural installations, and text, in order to express his concepts. His best-known photographic series documents city walls in a state of imminent demolition, combining his interests in graffiti and sculptural forms on the canvas of the walls.
