Chinese, b. 1954; lives and works in Beijing, China
An autodidactic artist, Xu Yong studied polytechnics in Luoyang and worked as an advertisement professional before starting his photography career. His photographic series are notable for their documentation of the remnants of historical events or artifices, for example, the traditional hutongs (alleyways) in Beijing vanishing under urban construction. Xu is also known for covering controversial topics such as the Tiananmen Square protest and Chinese sex industry, both considered to be heavily taboo subjects in Mainland China.
