Photographer Weng Fen (also known as Weng Peijun) graduated from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 1985. From the late 1990s onward, Weng worked on several enigmatic photographic series that ambivalently portray Chinese cities undergoing rapid modernization. These series typically feature girls in school uniforms, looking out at the skyline of the city, and suggest the tension between poetic contemplation and anxiety in light of China’s urban transformation.
