In 1993, RongRong moved into Dashanzhuang, later known as Beijing's East Village. While there, he became the core documentarian and collaborator of the neighborhood's resident performance artists. After the forced evacuation of the East Village in 1995, Rong continued to pursue various photographic projects with his partner Inri, combining self-portraits and architecture. In 2007, Rong and Inri founded Three Shadows Photography Art Center, the first space of its kind dedicated to the research, production, and display of photography in China.
