South African, b. 1986; lives and works in Soweto, South Africa
Musa Nxumalo is best known for his series Alternative Kidz, which with an intensely focused photographic practice documents the care-free moments of life amongst black South African youth who identify with alternative culture. By centering on this generation, he comments on the ability of counter-cultures to respond and react to social stereotyping. Raising questions about the nature of deliberate cultural deviation and contemporary modes of self-fashioning, Nxumalo forges a distinct visual language of his own—one of seemingly casual directness, but penetrating discernment.
