Chinese, b. 1961; lives and works in Beijing, China
Lin Tianmiao is one of the first Chinese female artists to receive international attention. She was a part of the Apartment Art generation, a group of Beijing-based artists that responded to censorship by the government and the limited availability of exhibition space by showcasing their work in private apartments in the ’90s. Working in sculpture, photography, video, printmaking, and installation, Lin often highlights issues of contemporary female identity. Specifically, her photography uses digital manipulation and staging to augment the surreal qualities of her work.
