Chinese, b. 1965; lives and works in Beijing, China
Hong Hao graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, in 1989. In a series called Spring Festival on the River (2000), Hong juxtaposed contemporary images with celebrated Chinese artworks that depict the same landscape along a journey from suburban Beijing to the city center. From 2009 onward, Hong began working with found objects of various historical origins. He systematically collected, arranged, and photographed these everyday items and, in doing so, created an atlas of idiosyncratic maps that documents and reflects his own psychological changes as his nation transitioned from communism to capitalism.
