Chen Shaoxiong graduated from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 1984, studying Chinese ink painting. He was a founding member of the Big Tail Elephant Group, an influential artist collective in the 1980s, and later became active as a member of the Xijing Men and Project Without Space groups. Chen’s early work ranged from video, installation, photography, to performance, specifically depicting urban transformation in Pearl River Delta region in Southern China. In 2005, he shifted his focus to combining ink wash drawings with installation. Often in video forms, those works portray photographic moments of protest around the globe.
